The Forgotten Trees: Nurturing a Legacy for Future Generations

As the landscapes around us continue to change, the impact of these environmental shifts is undeniable. While some might see these changes as part of nature's cycle, one thing remains clear: trees hold an essential place in our world.

Before I moved to Canada, my father often took us to his village in northeast Iran. There, two memories stand out vividly—stories of ancient walnut trees and graceful mulberry trees. These towering giants had stood the test of time, encircling a vibrant vineyard. They were more than just trees; they were part of the village's life. Children, would playfully steal a handful of walnuts, dodging the stern looks of the village elder. Nearby, by a spring of flowing water, the mulberry trees stood as sentinels, watching over the land.

But today, these scenes have faded into memories. The new generation knows nothing of the stories that unfolded beneath those trees because both the trees and the springs have disappeared. What remains is a barren village, where asphalt roads and half clay, half brick houses have replaced the once thriving landscape.

This loss leads us to ask: Why have we forgotten that these trees were planted for us? It is now our turn to sow the seeds of new life, to create a legacy that will endure for future generations. This responsibility, though simple, requires our active involvement, becoming a part of our daily lives. It should evolve into a tradition, a cultural practice, a sacred duty passed down from our generation to the next. For thousands of years, civilizations have understood the importance of this bond.

We must embrace this responsibility, the duty that comes with being part of this world. From the moment we took our first breath, we were connected to nature’s rhythm, entrusted with the care of the trees our ancestors planted. And even if we don’t yet have a tree in our name, we should begin the work of planting a seed that will grow into our most meaningful contribution to the world.

In the face of environmental challenges, we must not give in to apathy or despair. Instead, let’s come together, united in our effort to cultivate a future where trees flourish and thrive. Let this message resonate, reaching the hearts of people everywhere, across cultures and continents. For within the growth of a single seedling lies the potential to transform our world, bringing hope and inspiring generations yet to come.
